• For toenail fungus, Lamisil is taken for 12 weeks.

While skin conditions often clear up fairly quickly, nails and hair are replaced relatively slowly. Some patients notice improvements within a week or two of starting treatment, but it's not unusual to see little improvement until after treatment has ended, as it takes some time for new, healthy nails to grow out.

Warnings and Adverse Reactions

The most common side effect with Lamisil is headache, followed by stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea and flatulence. These effects will often stop as the body adjusts to treatment.

Though much rarer, there is a risk of more serious side effects. Stop using Lamisil immediately if experiencing the following:

• Smell or taste disturbances, including loss of smell or taste
• Any symptoms of liver damage; clay-colored stools, dark urine, severe itching, jaundice
• Depression or unusual mood changes
• Photosensitivity; skin sores, blisters, peeling or rashes that worsen in sunlight
• Altered immune system function; particularly exacerbation of cutaneous and systemic lupus erythematosus
